Overview
The Bridging the Digital Divide (BDD) project is a groundbreaking initiative by Tourism Innovation Lab Africa (TILA), implemented in partnership with SATSA and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
This initiative aims to revolutionize South Africa's tourism and hospitality industry by empowering micro and small businesses, employees, and entrepreneurs in rural and underserved areas with essential digital skills and AI-driven tools. By bridging the digital gap, BDD strengthens businesses' capacity to market, grow, and thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Successful Workshops: Conducted across multiple regions, including Limpopo, Pietermaritzburg, and the Northern Cape.

Collaborative Learning: Over 500 SMMEs, employees, and students engaged in free, accessible digital upskilling programs.

Innovative Partnerships: Strengthened collaboration between tourism businesses, local communities, and educational institutions.
The project not only bridges the gap but also provides long-term tools for success, transforming tourism enterprises into resilient, competitive players in the global market.
The Impact
🌟 The BDD project reached participants across 9 provinces in South Africa, with 55% from rural areas, 27% from small towns, and 18% from cities.
🌟 Thousands of learners engaged through workshops, webinars, and interactive e-learning on the Atingi Tourism & Hospitality eAcademy platform.
🌟 A proven model for empowering rural businesses and supporting South Africa’s Tourism Recovery Plan.
🌟Demographic Representation: KPIs included reaching a minimum of 40% female participation and 50% youth engagement, with outcomes surpassing both (44% women and, 73% youth)
